Summary, etc. A Grammar of the Kurnata Language written, printed and published by William Carey, 202 years ago in 1817, is the first ever printed Book in Kannada. The book was printed in the Missionary Press, Serampur, Kolkata. Manohara, of Bengal origin, formulated the Kannada fonts for this book. In that sense this book has a historical significance of being the first ever printed book in Kannada. William Carey was a professor of Sanskrit, Bengali and Marathi, in Serampur, Kolkata.<br/><br/>ಎ.ವಿ.ನಾವಡ ಮತ್ತು ಡಾ. ಬಿ.ವಿ.ಮಹೀದಾಸ ಅವರು ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿರುವ ವಿಲಿಯಂ ಕೇರಿ ಅವರ 'ಎ ಗ್ರಾಮರ್ ಆಫ್ ಕರ್ನಾಟ ಲಾಂಗ್ರೇಜ್' ಕೃತಿ ಚಾರಿತ್ರಿಕವಾಗಿ ಮಹತ್ವದ್ದಾಗಿದೆ.<br/>ಬಹುಭಾಷಾ ಪಂಡಿತನಾದ ಇಂಗ್ಲೆಂಡಿನ ವಿಲಿಯಂ ಕೇರಿ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ, ಬೆಂಗಾಳಿ, ಮರಾಠಿ, ತೆಲುಗು ಭಾಷೆಗಳಿಗೆ ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ ಬರೆದಂತೆ ೧೮೧೭ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡಕ್ಕೂ ಬರೆದ ಈ ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ ಕೃತಿಗೆ ಈಗ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಇನ್ನೂರು ವರ್ಷಗಳು ಸಂದಿವೆ. ಕನ್ನಡದ ವ್ಯಾಕರಣವನ್ನು ಭಾಷಾಶಾಸ್ತ್ರ (ಫಿಲಾಲಾಜಿ)<br/>ನೆಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷಿಕ ರಚನೆಯನ್ನು ಕುರಿತಂತೆ ರಚಿತವಾದ ಮುದ್ರಣಗೊಂಡ ಕ್ಷನಡದ ಮೊದಲ ಗ್ರಂಥ ಇದಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಗ್ರಂಥವನ್ನು ವಾರಣಾಸಿಯ ಬನಾರಸ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಕನ್ನಡ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ 29 ಪೀಠದ ಮುಖ್ಯಸ್ಥರಾದ ಡಾ.ಶಿವಾನಂದ ಅವರು ೧೯೯೭ರಲ್ಲಿ ಕೆಲವು ಬದಲಾವಣೆಯೊಂದಿಗೆ ಪ್ರಕಟಿಸಿದ್ದರು. ಅದನ್ನು ಸಂಪಾದಕರು ಗಮನಿಸಿದ್ದರೂ, ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ತಿಯಾಲಾಜಿಕಲ್ ಕಾಲೇಜಿನ ಪತ್ರಾಗಾರದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದ ಅದರ ಮೂಲ ಗ್ರಂಥದ ಪ್ರತಿಯನ್ನೇ ಆಧರಿಸಿ ಮತ್ತೊಮ್ಮೆ ಇಂದಿನ ಕಾಲದ ತಿಳುವಳಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರೊ. ಎ.ವಿ. ನಾವಡ ಡಾ. ಬಿ.ವಿ.ಮಹೀದಾಸ ಅವರು ಸಂಪಾದಿಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
