Fr Jerome D'Souza SJ remains one of the most remarkable figures whose legacy deserves far greater recognition. A Jesuit priest, a member of the Indian Constituent Assembly, a skilled diplomat and a passionate advocate for education and religious freedom-his contributions span multiple domains, each significant in its own right. His role in the making of India's Constitution, more significantly the framing of Minority Rights, Fundamental Rights and Directive Principles of State policy are immense to say the least. Yet, his name is scarcely known even in his native region of Mulki-Mangalore.
This book, Shaping India's Constitution and Diplomacy: Fr Jerome D'Souza SJ is my attempt to correct this historical oversight. It brings together Fr Jerome's pivotal role in shaping the Indian Constitution, his discreet, yet effective involvement in foreign policy as an adviser to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and his work in Church diplomacy, particularly in navigating the complexities of the Padroado system and getting back to Independent India's possession the French colonies. It also highlights his founding of the Indian Social Institute, Xavier Board of Higher Education and his larger vision of nation- building rooted in justice, dialogue and service.
