In this study, an attempt has been made to examine India's endeavour to attain social equality through the instrumentality of law. While we aspire for an egalitarian social order we are confronted with a harsh social reality marked by ineqaulities and discriminations. The author has tried to combine sociological and legal perspectives in order to study the totality of the Indian social phenomena in which caste, gender and class inequalities coexist and are often mutually reinforcing.
