N2  - To end the violent agitation, the Assam Accord was signed on 15 August 1985 between the Government of India and AASU leaders. The accord in the main highlighted: (a) the detection and deletion of the names of foreigners from the voters' list and their immediate deportation; and (b) constitutional, legislative and administrative safeguards to protect, preserve and promote the cultural, social and linguistic identity and heritage of Assamese people (Egreteau 2006). Following the accord, the AAGSP entered into state politics under the new name Ahom Gana Parishad (AGP).
